One Night Only

Three years ago, the government passed a mandate stating sex should exclusively be shared between married couples with the exception of one night a year where pre-marital sex is legal and protection is required for 12 hours. All people get a tattoo at the age of 18 that is red when not able to have sex, but turns green when you are married or on the one night the mandate lifts. It blinks red if you go against the mandate (have sex anyway, have unprotected sex, etc.) and transmits your location to the law enforcement branch in charge of these crimes. There is a biological sensor inside that tracks dopamine and if your levels spike at the same time as someone you're physically near, it documents that as a sexual encounter. Masturbation is legal and it is implied that gay sex successfully operates outside of the mandate. There are multiple anti-mandate signs and events shown throughout the movie.

Allie (Barbaro) is a commercial singer that is tired of being ghosted after having sex and decided this year she doesn't want to have sex with just anybody and, instead, wants to form a real connection. After her friend and roommate both bail on her plans, Allie ventures out alone to find someone for the night. Her tattoo is a lighthouse after the Little Red Lighthouse under the George Washington Bridge.

Owen (Turner) is a pizza shop owner in a committed relationship with his girlfriend, Malika (Hawke), and plans on proposing. She decides she wants them to have sex with other people instead and leaves him at their dinner spot to sleep with their neighbor, telling him to stay away from the apartment building that night. Owen, heart-broken, decides he's a nice guy that deserves better and is intent on finding it.

Allie and Owen keep running into each other - outside her apartment, in a bodega buying up the last condom, in a police station - and decide that while they do not want to sleep with each other, they will team up to find someone for the night.
