In Eternos, the capital city of the planet Eternia, young Prince Adam and his friend Teela are trained in the art of battle by Chief of the Royal Guard Duncan, Teela's father. The city is attacked by forces led by the evil warlock Skeletor, who takes Adam's parents, King Randor and Queen Marlena, prisoner, while Duncan is gravely injured by mercenary Trap Jaw. The Sorceress, guardian of Castle Grayskull on the outskirts of Eternos, helps Adam escape by opening a portal to Earth, Queen Marlena's homeworld. She entrusts Adam with the Sword of Power, reminding him to never let go of it. Adam escapes through the portal, but loses the sword in the process.
Fifteen years later, an adult Adam works as a human resources consultant and lives with his friend Hussein in Oklahoma City. Obsessed with finding the sword, he spends much time making drawings of Eternia. Adam finds the sword at a comic store and reclaims it, but is attacked by Skeletor's lieutenant, Beast Man. Teela, alerted after Adam touched the sword, rescues him, and they escape in her ship to Eternia.
Adam sees the ruined Eternos and is initially dismissed by the warriors of Eternia as a nobody. He and Teela are thrown into a prison cell, where a disheveled Duncan is being held for being drunk and disorderly, along with Roboto, a former combat robot reprogrammed as a servant. The four escape and convince the warriors, including Fisto, Ram-Man, Dian, Moss Man, and Mekaneck, to trust them. They are attacked by Skeletor's forces, and Adam uses the sword to summon the power of Grayskull, transforming into a heroic warrior and defeating Trap Jaw. After Adam, Duncan, Roboto, and Teela flee, Skeletor threatens to execute dissenters until they reveal who possesses the sword. After Moss Man is killed, Fisto gives up the information. Skeletor, obsessed with possessing the sword, reveals to Adam that his parents are still alive and demands the sword as ransom.
Adam, Teela, and Duncan make their way to Skeletor's lair at Snake Mountain, where Adam single-handedly defeats Skeletor's personal guard. Adam and Skeletor briefly fight, but a wayward strike causes the ceiling to cave in on top of Randor, killing him. Adam and his group are captured, and Adam is reunited with Marlena. Skeletor discovers that he cannot access the sword's powers. His counselor, sorceress Evil-Lyn, suggests performing a ritual at Castle Grayskull.
Adam and his team work together to escape and travel to Eternos for a final battle with the evil forces. Fisto, Ram-Man, Dian, and Mekaneck take on Skeletor's army, while Duncan manages to kill Trap Jaw, but Roboto is destroyed. After reuniting with his tiger companion Cringer, Adam confronts Skeletor and the two duel while Teela takes on Evil-Lyn. During the duel, the Sword of Power is shattered by Skeletor's Havoc Staff, and Adam is stabbed and placed into a telepathic, trance-like limbo by Skeletor. The Sorceress visits Adam in the dream and tells him that it is he, not the sword, that truly harbors the power of Grayskull. Now free, Adam reconstitutes the Sword of Power and defeats Skeletor, whose body disintegrates after his staff's power is reflected back on him. Evil-Lyn and Beast Man escape in the confusion.
Six months later, Queen Marlena is now the ruler of Eternos, and Prince Adam is revered as a hero. His friends gather around a refurbished Roboto, and his former roommate Hussein visits them to see for himself that everything Adam told him was true. Teela asks whether Adam wants to give himself a name, and he chooses He-Man.
Meanwhile, the Trollan magician Orko appears to deliver the moral of the story, Adam's long-lost twin sister Princess Adora leads a battle in the Fright Zone on the planet Etheria, and Evil-Lyn retrieves Skeletor's skull.
